“Stop Violence Against Children – Act Now!” - Regional Consultation for the UN Study on Violence Against Children

Human Rights Ombudsman Matjaž Hanežek participated between 5 and 7 July 2005 the consultation regarding Violence Against Children. Its aim was to contribute to the UN Secretary General’s Study on Violence against Children, which was being prepared by the independent expert Paulo Sergio Pinheiro.

The Study provided an in-depth global picture of Violence against Children and proposed recommendations for improving legislation, policy and programmes related to the prevention of such violence and responses to the abuse. The final report of the Study was submitted to the UN General Assembly in 2006.

The focus of the Consultation in Ljubljana was on various aspects of violence against children in Europe and Central Asia, in particular at home and in the family, in the school environment, in residential institutions and in communities. Its objective was to galvanize commitment and accelerate action to protect children from all forms of violence.

The Consultation was hosted by the Government of Slovenia and organised in collaboration with the Council of Europe, UNICEF, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the World Health Organization and the NGO Advisory Panel for the UN Study on Violence against Children.

The Human Right Ombudsman od the Republic of Slovenia published a special issue of a free newsletter »Ombudsman – how to protect your rights«, which combined good practices of protecting children's rights by ombudsmen in Europe.
