The Ombudsman in Izola

On 13 March 2024, the Ombudsman Peter Svetina opened for business in Izola. 17 people, mostly Izolans, but also some residents of other places on the Coast, came to talk to him and his colleagues.

In the morning, the Ombudsman met with the Director of the Izola General Hospital, mag. Radivoj Nardin and the professional director Tomaž Gantar, dr. med. They discussed the problems of healthcare and in this light touched upon the doctors' strike, patients' rights, the role of nurses and other medical staff, the shortage of specialists and agreed that interventions in the system should be carried out with a shaky hand and in a professionally thought-out manner.

The Ombudsman also visited the premises of the Izola Retirement Home and was outraged to note that the situation there infringes on the rights of the residents and will call on the Ministry responsible for a future of solidarity to take immediate action to ensure that they can live a dignified old age.

He and the Mayor of Izola, Milan Bogatič, agreed that transparency of authorities and public involvement in the adoption of regulations at local or national level are key to the implementation of policies, and that the absence of both is an indication of inappropriate forms of action by authorities that are, after all, at the service of the people.

The Ombudsman has also opened the 62nd Ombudsman's Corner, which brings the institution closer to people who are not proficient in electronic commerce, so that they can learn about the Ombudsman's work and, by analogy, petition the Ombudsman if they consider that their rights are being violated.
