The Human Rights Ombudsman Peter Svetina is monitoring developments related to threats directed at judges and prosecutors and some criminal acts that threaten their safety, such as the arson attack on the judge's house in Brežice, which is still under investigation. "The judicial branch of government represents the foundation of the rule of law, therefore attacks on representatives of the judicial branch of government undermine it, thereby also endangering social order," points out Ombudsman Svetina.
He adds that it is unacceptable in a democratic society that disagreement with court decisions is expressed through violence or threats. Such actions not only threaten the personal safety of individuals, they also threaten the independence of the judiciary as one of the pillars of a democratic society and destroy the foundations of coexistence and mutual respect in society. Encouraging hostility and violence also prevents constructive dialogue, which is essential to conflict resolution and community progress.
At the same time, the Ombudsman once again firmly condemns all forms of threats and violence in society and expresses zero tolerance for such actions, regardless of whether they are directed against public office holders or individuals in Slovenia. "Threats and violent behaviour do not and should not have a place in our society, and it is the responsibility of each of us to contribute to a safe environment. The state has the duty to protect everyone, ensure the safety of victims, and appropriately sanction the perpetrators," Svetina emphasises.
The Ombudsman welcomes the swift action of all competent authorities to curb all forms of threats and violence directed against judges and prosecutors and to ensure their safety and independence in the performance of their duties. It is imperative to prevent interference with the rule of law, as this also threatens respect for the human rights of all residents, the Ombudsman is clear.
