Joint statement ot the heads of the independent institutions of the Republic of Slovenia

Heads of the independent institutions of the Republic of Slovenia noted with extreme concern that in the recent period our institutions have faced repeated political pressures that appear as direct, constant and coordinated attacks through media and social networks. We are aware that the complexity of the epidemic represents a severe strain for all citizens and such circumstances require explicit efforts of all decision makers. Bearing that in mind, it is possible to witness numerous attempts of subversion of the democracy that hamper independent institutions to be able to properly implement their authorities and undermine established reputation.

Control over the government gives support to a solid and strong state, which provides a foundation for a successful social development and must be in the interest of all, especially it is the responsibility of the politicians to protect the supervisors as the main building blocks of the legal system. Politics cannot and must not regard constitutional rights and independent and autonomous state bodies watching over the state as necessary evil; on the contrary, they should be perceived as an achievement of the civilisation. Undignified, unfair, interest-driven and above all unsubstantiated criticism can shake the foundations of democracy which is extremely dangerous action causing long-term negative effects.

Signatories of the joint statement are aware that the decisions we adopt often encounter disagreement by individuals or groups under review. However, our decisions are justified and legally supported regardless of possible political consequences, thus general rejection or non-compliance with our decisions as well as accusations of performing political activities can be understood as extremely irresponsible, especially if accompanied by undignified public expression of opinion.

We reached a point that represents a critical moment to raise communication standards and cooperation in the state. This joint statement is intended to improve the situation according to the principle of top-down inspiration, what can be an important influence on the behaviour of the citizens and their trust in public institutions.

On the occasion of the anniversary of the Statehood Day, we are publicly calling the attention of the political sphere to recognise already achieved values and to pursue the development of democracy in the Republic of Slovenia. It is necessary to calm the situation and to ensure respect of all institutions that represent the immune system of the state.

We can be reasonably proud of work done so far and with all due responsibility we shall continue to implement all tasks defined by the law. Nevertheless, it is necessary to provide working conditions that allow cooperation and constructive dialogue and shall efficiently protect the basic rights laid down in the Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia.
