The Deputy Human Rights Ombudsman, Dr. Jože Ruparčič, attended the annual conference of the European Network of Ombudsmen for Children (ENOC) in Bucharest from 17 to 19 September 2025. The main topic was ensuring the mental and physical health of children as a foundation for their holistic development.
The participants stressed that all children – regardless of their social or economic background – must have access to quality and timely health care. They particularly highlighted the importance of prevention, a balanced diet, physical activity, and a safe environment, as these factors have a decisive impact on a child’s well-being in the long term.
"Healthy children progress more easily in development, feel happier, and have a stronger foundation for a quality life. Therefore, it is the responsibility of all of us – from parents and educators to policymakers – to ensure that they have equal access to quality and timely health care. Prevention, healthy nutrition, exercise, and a safe environment are not just recommendations, but necessary investments in the future of society," emphasised the Deputy Human Rights Ombudsman Dr. Jože Ruparčič at the conference.
At the meeting, the ombudsmen exchanged good practices and formulated recommendations for strengthening policies and practices that provide children with equal opportunities for healthy development. They assessed international cooperation as key to successfully facing common challenges.
The participation of Deputy Ruparčič confirmed the commitment of the institution of the Human Rights Ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia to creating a child-friendly environment in which every child can develop his or her full potential.
