The Deputy Ombudsman, Ivan Šelih, who is temporarily leading the institution of the Ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia until the election of the Ombudsman, met with his colleagues in the City Municipality of Maribor today, 17 September 2025. Nineteen people who believed that the Ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia (Ombudsman) could help them enforce their rights, which they believe are being violated by state authorities, local community authorities, or holders of public authority, applied to meet the Ombudsman, at the Municipality's premises. On this occasion, the Deputy Ombudsman also met with the Mayor of the Municipality of Maribor, Saša Arsenovič, and in a press statement outlined the key highlights of this outreach visit.
He emphasised that the problems of the citizens and other residents of the region who came for a meeting today are no different from the problems of residents elsewhere in Slovenia. "Maribor used to be at the forefront of social issues, but today these problems are comparable to problems elsewhere," said Šelih.
Thus, today, the Ombudsman's staff dealt with the problems of citizens and other residents of the region in various judicial procedures, encountered a case of bankruptcy proceedings, and a case of deletion of a company from the court register. Complainants also turned to the Ombudsman's staff for help due to problems with road, agricultural land, and related complications at the administrative unit, issues with registering temporary residence and other housing cases, a labour law case, and Roma issues in Maribor. A person with disabilities and the mother of a child with special needs also came for help, and the Ombudsman's staff also dealt with the problems of people with dementia in retirement homes.
"Almost no outreach visit, which are carried out in places across Slovenia as a rule once a month, takes place without reports of neighbourly disputes, and we also dealt with one today," emphasised Deputy Ombudsman Šelih in a statement to the public. He also said that the Ombudsman will examine in detail the problems of the people who contacted him today and try to achieve the elimination of violations if they are established in procedures, and that he was able to help some people with guidance immediately.
