On 10 September 2024, Human Rights Ombudsman Peter Svetina met with the Minister of Human and Minority Rights of Montenegro, Fatmir Gjeka, at the premises of the Ombudsman institution. They talked about the protection of the rights of minorities and ethnic groups in both countries, and the Ombudsman Svetina's guest was particularly interested in the efforts of the Ombudsman institution in taking care of the rights of persons with disabilities.
The Ombudsman informed his guest about the concern for the rights of Italian and Hungarian national minorities, as well as for Slovenians abroad and around the world, and for the rights of the Roma ethnic community. He also said that at bilateral meetings, he also learns about the problems of other constitutionally unrecognised minorities in Slovenia, such as the Albanian, Bosniak and German minorities. He assessed the position of indigenous national communities in Slovenia as legally well regulated, which does not mean that there are no questions or actual problems regarding their position.
Human Rights Ombudsman Svetina also informed Minister Gjeka about the extensive work of the institution in the field of caring for the rights of persons with disabilities. Among other things, he said that for more than 12 years the institution of the Ombudsman has been repeating the recommendation that the competent authorities prepare an appropriate proposal, and that the National Assembly adopt appropriate legal bases that will ensure that the Republic of Slovenia establishes an independent body to promote, protect, and monitor the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (KOPI), in accordance with the Paragraph 2 of Article 33 of the said Convention. Despite this, the Ombudsman performs many activities and monitors the implementation of KOPI. He also informed Minister Gjeka that in June 2023, within the framework of ENNHRI, the representative of the Jerneja Turin Centre took over the presidency of the Working Group for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
