Everyone has the right to freely manifest his religion or belief, either alone or in community with others, in private or in public. The enjoyment of all rights must be secured for all without distinction as to personal circumstances, including religion.
The Ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia (the Ombudsman) has repeatedly and strongly condemned any desecration of religious or other facilities with the intention of inciting hatred or intolerance towards a particular community, as these acts infringe on people's rights and destroy coexistence.
Vandalism such as that which occurred on the facade of St Nicholas Cathedral in Ljubljana affects not only the religious community, but all of us who strive for a respectful attitude towards all people, regardless of their religious beliefs or other personal circumstances. The Ombudsman's institution condemns this act.
The Ombudsman points out that in these cases it is essential to report immediately to the competent authorities, especially if the actions are tainted by suspicion of racist or other intolerant motives.
