The Human Rights Ombudsman and the Information Commissioner on the necessity of strengthening privacy protection in digitalisation processes

On Monday 9th of March, Human Rights Ombudswoman Dr Simona Drenik Bavdek met with Information Commissioner Dr Jelena Virant Burnik. They emphasised the importance of cooperation between independent supervisory institutions within the country. “Exchanging experiences strengthens our professionalism, effectiveness and independence,” the Ombudswoman emphasised.

Deputy Ombudsman Miha Horvat and Deputy Information Commissioner Alenka Jerše also attended the meeting at the offices of the Human Rights Ombudsman. Representatives of both institutions discussed current issues relating to the protection of personal data, privacy and dignity in the context of artificial intelligence and digitalisation, including the digitalisation of healthcare.

“We discussed the constitutionally controversial provisions of the Healthcare Digitisation Act adopted in autumn 2025, particularly from the perspective of vulnerable groups and individuals who are not proficient in using digital services,” said the Ombudswoman.

The participants also discussed possibilities for joint projects between the Ombudsman and the Information Commissioner to raise public awareness, particularly with regard to young people’s use of social networks.
