Human Rights Ombudsman Vlasta Nussdorfer called for an immediate elimination of all human rights violations that her office has been warning about for years as she addressed a reception Thursday marking Human Rights Day.

"Human rights are incumbent on every human, not some time in the future, now," she said. She called on officials and institutions to give the people back their dignity.

"It must be returned to the poor, the sick, the disabled, persons with special needs, minorities, the exploited and the victims of various forms of abuse."

It is unacceptable, according to her, that the Ombudsman must keep repeating certain recommendations every year to finally achieve change.

She said that while she would tirelessly continue to fight for human rights, many people had already become exhausted in their long wait for their rights.

All decision makers, from clerks to social workers, should work professionally, quickly and without undue delay.

"The main thought on every clerk's mind should be that they work for the people and any wrong decision can bring about consequences that will be difficult or even impossible to repair," she said.

The reception featured officials including President Borut Pahor and Speaker Milan Brglez, members of the academia, religious leaders, human rights NGOs and members of the diplomatic corps.
