Germany, Petitionsausschuss Deutscher Bundestag

Meeting between the Chairwoman of the Petitions Committee of the German Bundestag, Heidemarie Lüth, and the Human Rights Commissioner of the Council of Baltic States, Prof. Ole Espersen

On Wednesday, 19 January 2000 the Chairwoman of the German Bundestag's Petitions Committee, Heidemarie Lüth, met Prof. Ole Esperson from Denmark for a one-hour discussion. "We touched upon questions relating to petition procedures, human rights and the rights of minorities, and upon topical issues from the fields of citizenship law, aliens law and law concerning the residence of aliens in the Federal Republic", Mrs. Lüth said after the meeting.

A large number of the petitions currently being submitted to the Petitions Committee dealt with these questions, she went on. It had also been interesting for both sides to see, against the backdrop of the long tradition of ombudsmen in the Nordic states, the broad similarities in their areas of work. Prof. Espersen had reported that, as Human Rights Commissioner, he was concentrating in particular on the development and consolidation of democratic structures and institutions, such as ombudsmen, in the Baltic states and Russia.
