The publication of photographs of children in the context of a comparison with the family of a war criminal is an immoral act

On 8 March 2011 the Human Rights Ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia submitted her viewpoint to several media houses upon their request for her position regarding the publication of politician’s children in the weekly magazine Mladina. Due to the current interest in this topic, we decided to publish our opinion here as well.

The Human Rights Ombudsman emphasizes that each publication of personal data including photographs of children, without the prior consent of their legal representatives or guardians, is considered an encroachment on children's rights as determined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The publication of photographs of children in the context of comparing them to the family of a war criminal is an especially immoral act. The Ombudsman therefore expects the competent authorities to review the evidence of a criminal act and initiate due proceedings.
