Malta, Parliamentary Ombudsman

On 14 July 2000 Malta’s House of Representatives recommended the reappointment of Joseph Sammut as Ombudsman for a second and final term of five years.

According to law the Ombudsman is appointed by the President of Malta acting on a House resolution approved by no less than two-thirds of the members.

The motion was moved by the Prime Minister and seconded by the deputy leader of the opposition. In moving the motion the Prime Minister stated that the experience of the past five years proved how wise was parliament’s decision to set-up the Ombudsman’s office and to nominate Mr Sammut. Public opinion was not only aware of and appreciated the institution but was also evidently satisfied with the Ombudsman’s performance. This was reflected in the credibility and public confidence the Office enjoyed. These views were broadly endorsed by the spokesman for the opposition who thanked the Ombudsman for the work he carried out.

The motion recommending reappointment was approved unanimously and on 28 July 2000 Mr Joseph Sammut took the oath of office for the second five year term.
