Visit by Petitions Committee delegation to Stockholm, Sweden, for an information exchange with Swedish ombudsmen

From 18-21 September 2000, a delegation from the Petitions Committee visited Stockholm, Sweden, for a programme of meetings with the parliamentary ombudsmen of the Swedish Riksdag and other government institutions. The purpose of the visit was to learn about the role of the ombudsman in Sweden and exchange opinions on a range of issues relating to this area of work with Swedish colleagues. The delegation was headed by Petitions Committee chairperson Heidemarie Lüth (PDS), who was accompanied by the deputy chairperson Jutta Müller (SPD), Heidi Wright (SPD), Anton Pfeifer (CDU/CSU) and Helmut Wilhelm (Alliance 90/Greens).

The programme included meetings and talks with Sweden's Chief Justice Ombudsman, Equal Opportunities Ombudsman, Chancellor of Justice, Consumer Ombudsman and Press Ombudsman.

The delegation was given comprehensive information about the activities, working methods and organization of these institutions. This was followed by discussion sessions which offered an opportunity for a more detailed examination of issues arising from the different perception of roles/competencies and handling of citizens' petitions in Germany and Sweden.

A visit to the Swedish Riksdag was combined with a meeting with the Chairman and other members of the parliamentary Committee on the Constitution. This was followed by a guided tour of the building.
