  • On October 1st, dr. Roel Fernhout started his duties as National Ombudsman of the Netherlands. Below follows a short curriculum vitae.

  • On 22 June 1999 dr. Roel Fernhout was appointed National Ombudsman by the Lower House of Parliament. He took up office on 1 October 1999. Before being appointed National Ombudsman, he was Professor of European Law in the Faculty of Law at Nijmegen University, specialising in European migration law. Until 1991, he was a lecturer at the Free University of Amsterdam and an associate professor at Nijmegen University in administrative and constitutional law.
    He was vice-chair of the Dutch section of Amnesty International from 1983 to 1986 and chair from 1988 to 1992. From 1995 to 1999 he was chair of Legal Aid Arnhem, an asylum seekers legal aid centre, and a member of the Human Rights Committee of the Advisory Council on International Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is chair of the jury awarding the Tilburg University human rights prize and co-author of numerous publications including a well-known handbook on administrative law. 

  • Former National Ombudsman dr. Marten Oosting has been appointed, per 1 January 2000, as member of the Council of State. In the constitutional system of the Netherlands, the Council of State is the highest advisory body to the Crown. The advice of the Council of State is mandatory on all bills before they are presented to Parliament, whereas the Council of State also has the role of highest administrative court.

  • On October 19, National Ombudsman Roel Fernhout received Mrs. Fatma Zohra Ouhachi-Vesely, Special Rapporteur of the Commission on Human Rights on Toxic wastes and Dangerous Products and Human Rights of the UN-Commission for Human Rights.

  • On February 7, former National Ombudsman dr. Marten Oosting will participate in the International Symposium on the occasion of the 80th Anniversary of the Parliamentary Ombudsman of Finland, in Helsinki. Marten Oosting has been asked to deliver a speech "Roles for the Ombudsman: past, present and future".
