Parliamentary Ombudsman - new election

Mr. Tryggvi Gunnarsson has been elected Parliamentary Ombudsman for Iceland by a majority of the Althing, the Icelandic Parliament. His term of office is from January 1st 2000 to December 31st 2003. He was first provisionally appointed Parliamentary Ombudsman by a decision of the Althing´s Presidential Committee of members of parliament from November 1st 1998 until December 31st 1999 in the leave of absence of the then elected Ombudsman, Mr. Gaukur Jörundsson. Mr. Gaukur Jörundsson has been elected judge for the European Court of Human Rights.

Mr. Tryggvi Gunnarsson is born in Reykjavík on June 10th 1955. He received his Candidatus Juris degree from the University of Iceland, Faculty of Law, in 1982 and did his post-graduate studies in real property law at the University of Oslo, Faculty of Law, from 1986 to 1987. He was admitted to the Bar in 1984 and became a Supreme Court Advocate in 1990. Mr. Tryggvi Gunnarsson has held various positions in government service and within the judiciary. He held the post of Head of Department in the Ministry of Agriculture from 1982 to 1984. From 1984 to 1986 he was an assistant to the Justices of the Supreme Court of Iceland and was appointed Civil Court Judge at the District Court of Reykjavík in 1988. In 1989 he became a special assistant to the Parliamentary Ombudsman for Iceland. Mr. Tryggvi Gunnarsson has given lectures at the Faculty of Law of the University of Iceland. He was a partner of the law firm Adalsteinsson & Partners in Reykjavík from 1990 until his election to the office of Parliamentary Ombudsman.
