Parliamentary Ombudsman in Finland 80 years

The institution of the Finnish Parliamentary Ombudsman will celebrate its 80th anniversary on 7 February 2000. Eighty years is perhaps not much in the perspective of the history of mankind, but in the context of National Ombudsmen, the milestone is significant. The Finnish Parliamentary Ombudsman is the second oldest of its kind in the world.
To celebrate the anniversary, an International Ombudsman Symposium hosted by the Finnish Ombudsman, Mr Lauri LEHTIMAJA will be organised in Helsinki on that very day. The symposium is intended to focus on the various roles of the Ombudsman, in particular with regard to the protection of human rights and the rule of law.

The main speakers of the symposium will be Mr Marten OOSTING, Member of the Dutch Council of State and former National Ombudsman of the Netherlands as well as former President of the IOI, Mr Ole ESPERSEN, Commissioner of the Council of the Baltic Sea States, Mr Mikael HIDÉN, Professor of the Constitutional and International Law at the University of Helsinki. Comments will be presented by Ms Kerstin ANDRÉ, Parliamentary Ombudsman of Sweden, Mr Adam ZIELINSKI, Commissioner for Civil Rights Protection in Poland, Mr Oleg MIRONOV, Commissioner for Human Rights of the Russian Federation, Mr Eerik-Juhan TRUUVÄLI, Legal Chancellor and National Ombudsman of Estonia, Mr Matti PELLONPÄÄ, Justice at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, and Ms Liisa NIEMINEN, Professor of Public Law at the University of Lapland, Finland.

National Ombudsmen from the Nordic countries as well as from the Baltic Sea Region have been invited to attend the event together with Finnish participants from various fields related to the work of the Ombudsmen.
