Labour and Social Affairs Minister dr. Ivan Svetlik and Ombudsman dr. Zdenka Cebasek - Travnik met on Tuesday to talk about several topical issues, including media reports on an alleged incest case and the demands of former generals and officers of the Yugoslav People's Army living in Slovenia for military pensions.
The ombudsman and the minister agreed that most of the last week's media reports concerning an alleged incest case, in which a man is suspected of fathering his daughter's baby, were appropriate.
However, they stressed that media must be cautious not to reveal the victims' identities. Dr. Svetlik said that it was not appropriate if the media made a TV show out of an individual's misfortune. Dr. Cebasek - Travnik called upon the media to follow ethic standards when reporting on such cases.
Dr. Cebasek - Travnik told dr. Svetlik, that she, alongside President dr. Danilo Tuerk, received a letter from a group of former Yugoslav People's Army officers living in Slovenia demanding military instead of old-age pensions they are receiving now.
She will propose to them to file a formal request, which she will then look into in line with the prescribed procedure.
The pair also touched on today's protest of social services workers. They say that the ombudsman's recent statement suggested that their bureaucratic attitudes stripped welfare applicants of any dignity they had left.
She responded that her statements originated from numerous reports she received from welfare applicants and her own findings that welfare applications were in fact handled by social workers who were not successful in other departments.
