On 9 and 10 July the Human Rights Ombudsman Matjaž Hanžek and his deputy Jernej Rovšek attended an international workshop entitled ‘The Model of an Ombudsman Institution for the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia’ in Belgrade. The workshop was prepared by the Ministry of Justice of the FRY in cooperation with the Greek Ombudsman’s office and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
The main aim of the workshop was to select or formulate the most suitable model of a human rights ombudsman institution for the FRY. The FRY intends to adopt the Slovenian model as a basis for the formulation of its own model of human rights ombudsman and for this reason Slovenian experiences from practice to date were extremely valuable. The FRY also expects these in the future since on the basis of the comments of the participants it will prepare drafts of the model which require more detailed analysis and new proposals and emendations.
