Ombudsman Warns Employers Fail to Pay Workers' Pension Insurance

Ljubljana, 06 May (STA) - Human Rights Ombudsman Matjaz Hanzek has highlighted that some employers are not paying health and pension insurance for their workers regularly, urging the authorities to tackle the issue.

Holding a news conference on Friday, Hanzek said that especially small employers fail to pay insurance for their employees regularly, which could have horrible consequences since several thousand workers might be left without pensions and social security.

According to Hanzek, neither the tax administration nor the Pension and Disability Insurance Institute (ZPIZ) keep the proper records that would show whether pension and social security is being paid for, although the ZPIZ is obliged to do so in line with the law.

The ombudsman's office is convinced that the relevant legislation should be amended in order to prevent abuse.

The ombudsman said he had already warned about the problem Prime Minister Janez Jansa and Minister of Labour, Family and Social Affairs Janez Drobnic, who promised to examine the issue urgently.
