PM Promises the government would hurry to adopt appropriate legislation on the Roma

A prime minister Janez Jansa said the government would hurry to adopt appropriate legislation on the Roma as he met with Human Rights Ombudsman Matjaz Hanzek on Wednesday. The premier also promised the government would spur on those institutions and ministries that do not respond to the ombudsman's requests, Hanzek told the press after the meeting.

Jansa also told Hanzek that the only possible solution for the erased citizens is to adopt a constitutional law. "I believe that the readiness to gather a two-thirds majority required for the adoption of such a law is bigger than ever before," Jansa explained.
It was agreed, according to Hanzek, that the ombudsman would direct a second request to an institution through the prime minister, if the institution in question fails to respond to the first query. The prime minister will then look into the issue.

The processes can be made shorter and we have to guarantee greater responsiveness, Jansa said. To keep the government up-to-date on current issues, Jansa and Hanzek agreed to meet every year after the ombudsman compiles the annual report.

As the executive branch, the government can exert significant influence in making the resolution of problems related to the ombudsman's office faster and better, Jansa and Hanzek said.
