Postage Stamps Connect People, and the Human Rights Ombudsman Connects All Those Striving for the Realisation of Human Rights

“The motifs featured on today’s commemorative stamps illustrate the protection of human rights. They convey the message that anyone who believes their human rights or fundamental freedoms have been violated by state authorities, local community authorities, or holders of public authority may turn to the Human Rights Ombudsman for assistance. Proceedings before the Ombudsman are informal and free of charge,” said Human Rights Ombudswoman Dr Simona Drenik Bavdek, at the first presentation of the stamps.

On 8 May 2026, Pošta Slovenije issued a series of five stamps featuring human rights motifs at the proposal of the Human Rights Ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia. In this way, the Ombudsman is raising public awareness about the exercise of human rights in a somewhat unconventional yet engaging way.

Why stamps? “Just as a postage stamp always reaches its destination and connects people, I too – as the Human Rights Ombudswoman – wish, together with my colleagues, to connect all those striving for the realisation of human rights,” explained the Ombudswoman.

Five stamps with different denominations and motifs have been issued, each in a print run of 23,000 copies. The issue also includes a first-day cover and a first-day cancellation featuring a human rights motif. The stamps are available at post offices and in the online shop. According to Pošta Slovenije, they are purchased mainly by collectors, although anyone may use them on postal items.

The selected motifs were masterfully illustrated by Svetlana Milijašević, a multiple award-winning graphic designer from Nova Gorica.

The €1 stamp marked with the letter A features the motif of the Human Rights Ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia. The €1.30 stamp (marked B) features the motif Prohibition of Discrimination, while the €1.31 stamp features the motif Right to Privacy. The €1.51 stamp depicts Zero Tolerance for Violence, while the highest-value stamp (€1.96) features the motif Right to a Healthy Living Environment. More information about the meaning of the individual motifs will be provided in future publications.
