Representatives of the Human Rights Ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia – Deputy Ombudsman Ivan Šelih and Ombudsman Adviser Katarina Vučko – took part today, 11 May 2026, in the training of a new group of prison officers organised by the Administration for the Enforcement of Criminal Sanctions since January this year. Since March, the training sessions have been taking place at the new Centre for Education and Promotion in Dobrunje.

As part of the training programme, the Ombudsman’s representatives delivered a lecture on the institution of the Human Rights Ombudsman and the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM). They introduced future prison officers to the work of the Ombudsman and the NPM, placing particular emphasis on the importance of protecting human rights within the prison system and on the role of oversight mechanisms in preventing inhuman or degrading treatment.

Special emphasis was placed on respecting the dignity of persons deprived of their liberty and on the importance of prison officers carrying out their duties in a professional, responsible and lawful manner.

The Ombudsman’s participation in these training sessions represents an important contribution to strengthening awareness of human rights and standards of conduct within the system for the enforcement of criminal sanctions.
