European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment meets with the Ombudsman during a visit to Slovenia

A delegation of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishmenthttps://www.coe.int/en/web/cpt/home (CPT) is in Slovenia at the moment as part of its regular periodic visit. On the first day of the working week, the delegation led by Maria Kmecova visited the institution of the Human Rights Ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia and discussed the protection of persons against torture and other forms of inhumane treatment with the representatives of the National Preventive Mechanism after the welcome from Ombudsman Peter Svetina.

During the sixth visit, which normally takes place approximately every four years, the delegation will visit various institutions where people are deprived of their freedom, including prisons, psychiatric hospitals, police stations, the centre for foreigners and other places. It will check the provision of legal protection and the treatment of persons deprived of their liberty. Members of the delegation will also talk with representatives of various institutions and ministries about the implementation of the recommendations made by the CPT during its last visit in 2017.

The members of the National Preventive Mechanism familiarised the visitors in more detail with the NPM's findings from the visits to places of deprivation of liberty in our country, and thus also with regard to the progress in the implementation of the recommendations made by the CPT to our country during the previous visits (the Ombudsman regularly reports on this in his annual reports).
