On Wednesday, 11 September 2024, the Ombudsman conducted business outside the headquarters in Šoštanj, where he met with those residents of the region who felt that various authorities and institutions were violating their rights. He also spoke with the host, Mayor Boris Goličnik, and opened the 95th Ombudsman's Corner in Šoštanj. He also opened three more in the municipalities of Polzela, Braslovče and Šmartno ob Paki, where he discussed with the mayors the current issues they are dealing with.
He talked about the role of the Ombudsman institution with the mayor of Polzela municipality, Jožet Kužnik, touching on some concrete cases that they are dealing with in the municipality and discussed the actions of the authorities, especially the inspection services.
The Mayor of Braslovče, Tomaž Žohar, outlined to Ombudsman Svetina the municipality's efforts to settle the post-flood stories of many citizens. They agreed that the solutions must be based on expert arguments and that it is imperative that the mistakes of the past are finally remedied so that in the future, the damage caused to the inhabitants of the Šaleška-Savinja area by last year's floods would no longer occur.
The Mayor of the Municipality of Šmartno ob Paki, Janko Kopušar, emphasised that the stories of the people affected by the floods are different and that it is impossible to treat everyone equally. The mayors agreed with the Ombudsman that first of all, it is necessary to take care of those who were left without everything a long time ago, and then, in accordance with the elaborated priority plan, also for others. The mayors also emphasised that the state's promises that the hardships would soon be solved caused false hope among the inhabitants, and the consequences were felt by the employees of the local communities, who did not have or do not have the answers that the state is obliged to provide.
Ombudsman Peter Svetina stresses that the state, with the help of municipalities, must reach those who need help the most and act faster, because for those affected by the floods, who are waiting for solutions, every moment is too long.
The Ombudsman and his colleagues welcomed nine citizens of the region on business in Šoštanj. Their complaints related to the easement issue in connection with the laying of the gas pipeline, water supply issues, housing conditions, domestic violence and court cases.
