15th Anniversary of the adoption of the Human Rights Ombudsman Law and 60th Anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

On the occasion of the Human Rights Day, December 10, the Human Rights Ombudsman of Slovenia organised a conference at the Faculty of Law in Ljubljana to mark the 15th anniversary of the adoption of the Human Rights Ombudsman Law and the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

On the same day, at 7 p.m., on the occasion of the Human Rights Day, the Human Rights Ombudsman Zdenka Čebašek – Travnik, DSc, held a speech for the highest representatives of the state, the diplomatic corps and the representatives of civil society at the premises of the Faculty of Law.

The opening speech for the participants of the one-day international professional conference was held by the President of Slovenia Dr. Danilo Türk.

The conference was organised in two parts. In the morning, national experts presented the beginnings of the institutionalised protection of human rights in Slovenia which led to the adoption of the Human Rights Ombudsman Law on 20 December 1993. The emphasis was not only on the historical cross section of that period, but on the actual situation in the field of human rights in Slovenia. Activists and other important persons from the above mentioned period also participated and provided answers to the questions about what was done in Slovenia in the field of human rights in the last 20 years and where do we stand today.

The afternoon part of the conference began with the speech by the President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia Mr. Jože Tratnik. Other speakers were ombudsmen or their representatives from abroad which spoke about their work, especially about the international standards for the protection of human rights.
